Many years ago I heard a reputed speaker saying “Monday morning is a bad day for patients. Dentists attend conferences on Sundays. They try out new techniques on Monday mornings. By next Monday morning all of it has failed.”
Where should a dentist exactly search for information. We are living in times of information explosion. Information is available on our palms on our cell phones.
And also what should a dentist search for ?
Which information should he browse at ?
Which speaker/ mentor has to be trusted ?
How much time should he spend on searching for information ?
This month I will express my stray thoughts on the issue.
To begin with please ensure that your basics & foundations of all aspects of dentistry are strong enough. If your basic knowledge is strong you will be able to take proper decisions. Also ensure that you know the basics of practice management & management in general. By doing so you will utilize your time properly.
For e.g. there is no point browsing through information on implantology if you are not doing implants in your practice.
The most important point now is to take all information that comes in from FB, Whatsapp groups etc. with a pinch of salt. Not all of it may be true. Also some of it may be plain false. Some of it may be impractical to implement in our practices.
Plan of action:- First of all set a goal for your practice. It has to be realistic. Take help from a practice management mentor to set up goals.
Once you have set up a goal than all your CDE time must revolve around that goal.
You may want to introduce implantology in your practice or fixed orthodontics etc.
Once you have set up a goal read all major textbooks on the subject over again.
After that jump on to the CDE.
Rely on professional websites more than FB groups.
Another very important aspect is selection of speakers & mentors. Select speakers who speak from clinical experience.
Preferably the speaker must have at least 20 years or more of clinical experience.
Select a speaker who does “ordinary things extra-ordinary well rather than the one who tells you about all the extra-ordinary things that he did.
