In dental college we are taught how to restore a class four cavity. Various concepts relating to restoring of class four cavities are taught.
But what is not taught is how to manage class four staff.
Do remember that class four staff has a vital role in success of the practice. So I would strongly recommend that dental surgeons take out time at regular intervals to interact and train their staff.
The best results are obtained if a practice management consultant or a soft skills trainer trains the staff. He will take an impartial view of the situation and train the staff on various aspects like, sterilization of instruments, maintenance of the clinic, telephone etiquette, soft skills and practice growth. This investment in staff training gives stellar returns.
Staff training has to be done on regular intervals by the dentist, his spouse if required or an external coach. Also call an external coach who can conduct mediation sessions, vipassana for staff, etc.
In spite of training if you feel that somebody is unresponsive or in disciplined or incorrigible than it is better to phase out such staff. It is better to work without staff rather than to have bad and unresponsive staff.
Care has to be taken right from the time they are recruited. The first few days of employment are very important. Start training them right from day one. You need to develop plenty of training aids.
Staff management is a complex topic and not everything can be covered in this short essay. Two most important points are:
1.Take professional help to hire and train staff. Only trained staff can grow the practice.
2.Their compensation should include a fixed salary and a variable incentive. Only if the staff is incentivized will they work to grow the practice.
Use the staff to GROW your practice and not just to MAINTAIN the practice.
